El mejor regalo de cumpleaños: seguir vivo

Parte 1

Me puse la mochila antes de salir de casa y abracé a mi madre junto a la puerta. Su perfume suave quedó impregnado en mi ropa mientras ella me sostenía con fuerza. Afuera, el sol apenas comenzaba a iluminar la calle silenciosa. Todo parecía un día común.

—Ya me voy, mamá.
—Cuídate mucho, hijo.
—Siempre.

Mi padre estaba sentado frente a la mesa tomando café caliente mientras hojeaba el periódico. Levantó la mirada apenas escuchó la despedida y sonrió de lado. Había cansancio en sus ojos, pero también tranquilidad. El reloj avanzaba lento sobre la pared.

—Cuando regreses celebramos temprano tu cumpleaños.
—Claro que sí, viejo.

Salí de casa sonriendo mientras acomodaba la mochila sobre mis hombros. El aire fresco de la mañana golpeó mi rostro y escuché a los vecinos iniciar su rutina diaria. Pensé en la celebración de esa noche y en lo rápido que estaba pasando el tiempo. Caminé hacia el trabajo sin imaginar nada malo.

La avenida estaba llena de personas cruzando de un lado a otro entre el ruido de motores y bocinas. Algunos vendedores gritaban ofertas desde las esquinas mientras los autobuses avanzaban lentamente. Miré el semáforo cambiar de color y seguí caminando entre la multitud. Entonces escuché un estruendo acercándose demasiado rápido.

Giré la cabeza y vi un camión perder el control en medio de la calle. Sus ruedas rechinaron con fuerza mientras varias personas gritaban aterradas. El conductor tocaba la bocina sin detenerse y el vehículo venía directo hacia mí. Mi cuerpo quedó paralizado por un segundo.

—¡Ey…!

El sonido de los frenos llenó el aire.

Después llegó el golpe.

Y finalmente, el silencio.
